The use of the platysma muscle as a pedicled ‘apron’ flap in order to minimise the overactivity of a free muscle transfer, used in the treatment of facial palsy, is described in admirable detail. The successful results are carefully assessed with good photographs and although the numbers are small, it is clearly a beneficial treatment. It possibly should be read in conjunction with the carefully placed next article in the journal which describes the treatment and the results of botulinum toxin in facial palsy.
