This is a retrospective study of 250 consecutive parotidectomy patients at units in Belgium and the Netherlands. The sensitivity and specificity of FNAC was 64% and 99% respectively. The sensitivity being slightly lower than the often quoted 80%. MRI and CT was the imaging used most often with MRI being the imaging of choice. Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma was surprisingly the most frequently identified malignant lesion. The incidence of Frey’s was 4.4% and recurrence of benign tumours 2.3%. Facial nerve palsy occurred transiently in 29.2% and permanently in 7.9%. Overall, the paper gives a reasonable summary of the incidence of pathology side effects and complications of parotid surgery.
