Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty, edited by Dario Bertossi, Ricardo Nocini, and Ali Pirayesh, is an authoritative and comprehensive guide to a rapidly growing field in aesthetic medicine. This book presents a nuanced exploration of non-surgical techniques for rhinoplasty, offering readers a detailed and practical approach to enhancing nasal aesthetics without invasive surgery. The book brushes on surgical rhinoplasty techniques to offer the injector a brief insight into this complex surgery.
Content and structure: The book is well structured, guiding the reader through the fundamentals of non-surgical rhinoplasty before delving into more complex topics. It begins with an overview of nasal anatomy, toxins and dermal fillers emphasising the importance of understanding the intricate structures and functions of the nose to achieve optimal results. This foundational knowledge is crucial for practitioners to avoid complications and ensure patient safety.
Subsequent chapters cover techniques and materials used in non-surgical rhinoplasty. The editors provide images; however, these are labelled with very small characters and if you do not use reading glasses, you might end up using a hand lens. The numbering is particularly tedious to follow. It would have been much preferable to provide a decent sized image with much clearer arrow labelling.
Expert contributions: One of the book’s strengths is the diverse expertise of its contributors. Bertossi, Nocini, and Pirayesh have assembled a team of renowned specialists from around the world, each bringing their unique perspective and experience to the table. This diversity enriches the content, presenting a global view of non-surgical rhinoplasty practices and innovations. With such renowned authors I would have expected much more detailed videos and step-by-step pictures to guide the novice injector. This is unfortunately lacking.
Educational value: This work is of limited educational value due to the inferior quality of the image labelling and the small images used. Visuals are extremely important in consolidating practical knowledge on such a complex subject and such a dangerous injection area. Anatomy, rheology and complication management can be found in multiple books / courses / online lectures.
Critical analysis: While the book is comprehensive, potential areas for improvement could be the inclusion of better quality of images, ultrasound images and step-by-step pictures with side-by-side ultrasound or dissection. Comparative studies on the efficacy and longevity of varied materials and techniques are also lacking. A comparison between cannula and needle techniques is lacking as well. Overall change in facial aesthetics e.g. immediate and delayed impacts on smiling, mouth opening, etc., should have been mentioned.
Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty is unfortunately not a book that I would recommend. One would be better off attending an inject and dissect course followed by a non-surgical rhinoplasty masterclass by a proven expert to gain solid practical and theoretical knowledge.
