This textbook is impressive. It combines the basics of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) from principles, set up and technique, through to a multitude of reconstructive choices for defects of the head and neck. This would be a useful textbook for both the budding Mohs Surgeon but also an addition to the armamentarium of any head and neck reconstructive surgeon.

The book is comprised of 250 pages split into 12 main chapters. The first of these focuses on MMS, from planning the case, set up, processing, to special site considerations when excising. An overview of facial surgery is then followed by chapters on the multiple facial subunits and finishes with a concise summary of perioperative management considerations including preoperative planning and postoperative issues. Within each chapter, there is a basic introduction, important anatomical considerations and then a multitude of operative reconstruction techniques for a range of defects that could be encountered by the reconstructive surgeon. The operative techniques are often accompanied by descriptive text or helpful diagrams and photographs demonstrating key aspects of the procedures. The book also has an online video resource to supplement some of the operative techniques described within this textbook.

Although this is a particularly good book, the reviewer in me would comment that some of the images of repairs are not too clear and do not clearly demonstrate the technique being used or are missing a photo of a stage to aid the reader. The experienced surgeon in me would also comment that other reconstructive options may be available that are not mentioned in the text. However, I struggle to find a similar book that details such a wide range of defects and the reconstructive options available, referencing the 20 years and 80,000 case experience that is behind this text.

In summary, this is a well-written book covering the basics of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and encompassing a wide range and choice of reconstructive options. This would make a great companion for any trainee / resident wanting to learn about facial skin cancer surgery and will be added to my bookshelf for the future.
