A brilliantly succinct hardback discussing various approaches to botulinum toxin treatments for the face and the body. There are six chapters each outlining a specific category from general background and pharmacokinetics to upper and lower face, as well as non-facial indications and skin quality treatments. There is an abundance of good-quality images illustrating the techniques that have been discussed, as well as a step-by-step approach to how to tackle the specific regions and complications.

This book is a great reference point for new injectors, dermatology or surgical trainees, or those early in their careers, helping guide them to the best practices in botulinum toxin treatments. Each chapter starts with a concise introduction, and key injection patterns alongside their complications are approached in a well-written manner. The initial chapter discusses the history of botulinum toxin, mechanism of action, and the importance of a good foundation in medical education in the aesthetic industry. There is a fantastic table that compares product characteristics and differences between three different well-known toxin brands. Reconstitution and spread are considered alongside patient consultation, the importance of clear documentation, and addressing common side-effects and complications. Injection techniques are also briefly covered from bolus to microtoxin.

The second chapter goes on to discuss the upper third of the face with the author giving an account of his clinical techniques using his preferred toxin brand. The third chapter covers the middle third of the face and the fourth lower third. Both are nicely written and presented, focusing on the salient aspects and considering potential complications that can occur with these types of injection patterns. Non-facial indications are then considered. This starts with neck treatments and goes on to also cover hyperhidrosis and calf shaping which is a popular practice in some Asian countries. The final chapter discusses skin quality improvements, from abnormal scarring and androgenic alopecia treatments to reduction of pore size, facial flushing, and managing excessive sebum production. The author has done a great job of collating the important elements of toxin treatments to help guide new and junior medical injectors.

This is an exceptionally useful guide for trainee dermatologists, and maxillofacial and plastic surgeons who would like a succinct reference text to use as a guide when planning treatments. Overall, I feel this is a great book. Each chapter is easy to navigate and helps you understand the approaches to botulinum toxin treatments for both the face and body.
