Since graduating from Edinburgh University, Mark Butterworth trained extensively in plastic surgery spending time at Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow, two years in Adelaide (Australia) and six years in London, including six months at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. He returned to Edinburgh in 2001 to take up his post as Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust as well as at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. He is a full member of BAPRAS.

In the private sector, he specialises in cosmetic facial rejuvenation surgery and cosmetic breast surgery in addition to body re-contouring surgery and liposuction, including post massive weight loss surgery. He has lectured extensively in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery both in the UK and overseas.

In his role as an NHS consultant, Mr Butterworth specialises in the treatment of breast cancer patients undergoing reconstruction and in the surgical treatment of malignant melanoma.
